In one of the most anticipated projects in New Mexico history, Facebook has chosen Los Lunas, NM as the location of its seventh data center.
The social networking giant cited the state’s competitive business climate, strong workforce, commitment to infrastructure investment, and opportunities for renewable energy development, among other reasons for locating the project in New Mexico.
“I’m excited to share that Facebook’s 7th data center — powered by 100% renewable energy — will be in Los Lunas, New Mexico here in the United States,” said Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a statement on his Facebook page.
The data center’s initial phase will bring thousands of long-term construction jobs and an initial investment of $250 million. The potential for multiple phases which would create more jobs and more investment also exists. Also, like other similar projects there is potential to attract other high tech companies to New Mexico.
“The Los Lunas Data Center will support thousands of new construction jobs, dozens of long-term operations jobs, and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in new investments to New Mexico,” said Facebook West Region Director of Data Center Operation, Ken Patchett.
The Los Lunas Data Center will be one of the most cutting edge centers in the world.
“Data centers deliver all of Facebook’s services to you. They’re some of the most complex machines ever created. The Los Lunas Data Center will be one of the most advanced and energy-efficient data centers in the world,” said Zuckerberg.
Facebook has committed to buying local materials and hiring local employees to the greatest extent possible, as it prepares to build and staff a facility that will span more than 510,000 square feet in its initial phase. Construction is slated to begin as early as next month, and it is expected to come online in late 2018.
