Amazon is expanding its tech hub in Pittsburgh, PA, creating 125 new tech jobs in the city. The tech hub, which invents and builds new products and services for Amazon customers, originally opened in early 2017, and will be doubling its workforce with this expansion.
“Amazon is excited to be creating over a hundred new technology jobs in Pittsburgh,” said Bill Kaper, general manager of Amazon local office. “Since Day 1 at Amazon in Pittsburgh, we’ve been focused on expanding our pool of local technical talent as well as investing in the community. From machine translation engineers to Alexa speech scientists, our Pittsburgh employees love inventing every day on behalf of customers.”
Amazon has secured an additional 22,000 square feet to expand its existing office in the SouthSide Works building. The tech hub is one of more than a dozen nationwide that develops new products and services for Amazon customers. The local team of engineers primarily focuses on building shopping and entertainment experiences in multiple languages and played a key role in the launch of Amazon.com in Spanish, a feature used by millions of customers. The Pittsburgh office also includes team members who are working to bring the Alexa experience to customers’ cars.
Amazon has created more than 10,000 jobs in Pennsylvania and since 2011 has invested over $4 billion in the state, from building and operating fulfillment infrastructure and research facilities to compensation to its employees.
“This expansion is more evidence that Pittsburgh has truly become a national leader in technology and innovation,” said Governor Tom Wolf. “The 125 jobs created with this expansion is great news for Pittsburgh workers and their families, and I applaud Amazon for growing their presence here. Companies like Amazon understand that the pool of talent in this city is remarkable, and my administration will continue to work to make our workforce the most prepared, talented, and able workforce in the country – not just in Pittsburgh, but throughout the entire commonwealth.”
