Uber To Add Advanced Technologies Center In Pittsburgh

Uber Technologies Inc. is expanding in Pittsburgh – establishing an additional Advanced Technologies Center (ATC) research facility on a 42-acre section of the Almono Development site in the Hazelwood neighborhood. Over the next few months, the San Francisco-based ride-sharing company will break ground on the development, which will include “complete streets” infrastructure (roads, sidewalks, bike lanes) and will be used for testing self-driving cars for up to five years, once the development is completed.

UberThe additional facility follows a previous investment, announced last year, of Uber’s partnership with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to establish an ATC in Pittsburgh’s Strip District – near the CMU National Robotics Engineering Center – that will focus on development of key long-term technologies, primarily in the areas of mapping and vehicle safety and autonomy technology.

“The investments we’re making in Pittsburgh today are key to the long-term future of transportation. Self-driving technology has the potential to drastically cut down on accidents and congestion while making transportation even more affordable and convenient for everyone,” said John Bares, director of Uber’s ATC in Pittsburgh. “The adoption of this technology at scale is likely still many years off, but the Steel City is a terrific place to invest now and in the future.”
