Often referred to as the “Gateway to the South,” Louisville’s strategic location, robust infrastructure, and thriving business ecosystem has allowed the city to emerge as a logistics powerhouse.

Nestled along the Ohio River, Louisville enjoys unparalleled connectivity. The river connects the city to the Mississippi River, the primary artery for U.S. barge traffic. Interstates 64, 65, and 71 converge there, facilitating movement of goods by road and linking Louisville to major cities like Chicago, Atlanta, and Nashville.

Meanwhile, Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) serves as a vital air cargo hub, with UPS Worldport—the world’s largest automated package handling facility—operating within its premises. A logistical marvel, UPS Worldport handles millions of packages daily. The facility’s efficiency, advanced technology, and round-the-clock operations make it a critical node in global supply chains. In 2023, the company announced the expansion of its Louisville training center and the addition of a one million-square-foot healthcare logistics facility and a new 275,000-square-foot hangar, totaling $453 million in investment and 315 new jobs.

Louisville’s economy thrives on a symbiotic relationship between logistics and manufacturing. The region hosts major manufacturing facilities, including automotive plants, food processing centers, and pharmaceutical manufacturers. These industries rely on efficient logistics networks to transport raw materials, components, and finished products. In just the last year, Louisville has announced five manufacturing projects, representing more than $44 million in investment and nearly 200 jobs.

“By leveraging our logistical strengths, Louisville is able to support and grow in other key industry areas,” said Dr. Joshua McKee, Interim Director of Economic Development for Louisville Metro Government. “We are excited to be recognized by Business Facilities magazineas a Top Logistics Location for the third time. As the world continues to relyon efficient supply chains, Louisville stands above other cities for its logistical excellence.”
