Metro Atlanta is a global logistics hub due to its strategic location, world-class infrastructure, skilled workforce, and business-friendly environment. It serves as a key point through which goods and people efficiently move to reach the rest of the U.S. and abroad. It is home to some of the largest logistics-enabled companies in the world, including The Coca-Cola Company, Delta Air Lines, The Home Depot, and UPS.
Major interstates, including I-20, I-75, and I-85, traverse the region, allowing businesses to reach 80% of the U.S. market by truck freight within two days of Atlanta, and these put the state of Georgia on direct routes to 15 other states.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has long been the world’s busiest and most efficient. It puts 80% of the U.S. population within a two-hour flight, moving 100+ million people and 650,000 tons of cargo annually.
Metro Atlanta’s growth has also been fueled by the state’s continued investments in rail and port infrastructure, as two Class 1 railroads operated by CSX and Norfolk Southern add to the most extensive rail network in the southeastern U.S. That rail also connects Atlanta to the single largest and fastest-growing container terminal in the U.S, the Port of Savannah. The Georgia Ports Authority has made substantial investments in inland ports that reduce truck traffic on Atlanta’s highways.
Lastly, the region has seen a significant increase in distribution centers over the last five years, prompting improvement projects on major interstates. Companies like the Netherlands’ rapidly-growing NewCold continue to locate in metro Atlanta, building state-of-the-art distribution facilities, adding to the already 600 million square feet of warehouse distribution space, and making Atlanta the country’s sixth-largest population center.
In addition to physical infrastructure assets, metro Atlanta’s mature logistics ecosystem of logistics tech businesses—with particular prowess in robotics—means the region is full of experts in moving goods around the world.
