Siemens Wind Turbine Expansion to Create 600 Jobs in Ontario

Pattern Energy Group and Samsung Renewable Energy have announced the completion of an expanded agreement with Siemens to supply turbines for four wind energy projects totaling 870 MW.

Pattern Energy Group LP and Samsung Renewable Energy have announced the completion of an expanded agreement with Siemens to supply turbines for four wind energy projects totaling 870 megawatts (MW). Up to 600 jobs will be created from CS Wind’s tower and Siemens’ blade factories in Windsor and Tillsonburg, Ontario, respectively. Together, the four projects will provide enough clean energy to power more than 300,000 local homes in Ontario each year.

“By committing to Ontario-made turbines, we are focused on bringing new jobs and revenue to the province, along with clean energy,” said Mike Garland, CEO of Pattern Energy. “The creation of up to 600 new jobs is direct evidence of the successful framework established by the Green Energy Act and Green Energy Investment Agreement. Together, these initiatives have created a vibrant green energy economy in Ontario, developing wind power projects, building factories, and putting thousands of Ontarians to work throughout the province.”

“Together with our partners, Samsung is proud to be making an unprecedented $7-Billion private sector investment in Ontario,” said Cheol-Woo Lee, Senior Executive Vice President of Samsung C&T Corporation.  “We are moving forward aggressively to fulfill our commitment to induce new green manufacturing in Ontario, to help us build the world’s largest cluster of wind and solar power, putting Ontario on the global clean energy map. Because of Samsung’s Agreement with the Province of Ontario, we are moving forward to create real jobs and real clean energy in Ontario, for generations to come.”

“Siemens is pleased to be supporting the Samsung-Pattern projects in Ontario,” said Bill Smith, SVP Siemens Energy in Canada.  “Siemens technology is an ideal fit for the projects and for Ontario wind resources in general.  Our Tillsonburg blade facility will be a key link in the supply chain, along with other local sources.  The enabling legislation within the Green Energy Act and Samsung-Pattern’s undertakings in this regard are an important step in Ontario’s drive to be a world leader in the development of wind power as a significant ingredient in the supply mix of the province’s electricity system.”

The four wind power projects under development in Ontario that will provide the lead orders to support locally-made Siemens turbine components are:

  • 270 MW South Kent Wind project in the Regional Municipality of Chatham-Kent
  • 150 MW Grand Renewable Energy Park in Haldimand County
  • 270 MW K2 Wind project in the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
  • 180 MW Armow Wind project in the Township of Kincardine

Samsung and its partners have committed to bring $7 billion in investment to Ontario to create 2,500 MW of new renewable energy sources. This investment is helping to establish four manufacturing facilities in Ontario, creating 900 new manufacturing jobs and 16,000 jobs overall in Ontario’s Green Economy. These initiatives are a direct result of Samsung’s Green Energy Investment Agreement with the Government of Ontario.
