WHEELING: $350 MILLION IN NEW DEVELOPMENT
Wheeling, IL stands out as a community on the move, as over $350 million in new development has taken place during the last few years. Wheeling is also home to 850 businesses and a growing residential market.
The Village Board’s longstanding commitment to fostering growth in Wheeling has resulted in substantial recent successes, including the openings of Wheeling Town Center and Uptown 500, two transit-oriented mixed-use developments that represent a combined investment of over $200 million.
More projects in the pipeline within Wheeling include The Union, a 53-unit multi-family development, and London Crossing, a horizontal mixed-use community that will bring new luxury townhomes and commercial retail space to the western edge of Wheeling’s growing Town Center area. As a result of these recently completed projects, new residents are moving to Wheeling, and several restaurants and retailers are opening up for business.
Several driving factors helped secure modern developments that have transformed Wheeling’s landscape. One is Wheeling’s strategic location, with IL-53, I-294, I-94 and O’Hare International Airport just minutes away. Another is the Village’s innovative financial assistance programs, which include four active Tax Increment Financing Districts encompassing over 800 acres of land, a series of property tax abatements for certain types of projects and the new Wheeling Restaurant and Retail Build-Out Grant Program (for more information, visit www.wheelingil.gov/grants).
With 3.5 square miles dedicated to commercial and industrial uses, Wheeling boasts a wide range of industries, from corporate to hospitality to family-owned shops. A strong skilled workforce lives in or close to Wheeling, making it logical for manufacturers and corporations to choose Wheeling as their main commercial hub.
“Wheeling is an excellent community for commerce in Chicagoland’s North Shore trade area, and the continued levels of investment and interest are evidence of that,” Economic Development Director Patrick Ainsworth said. “The incentives that the Village has recently implemented will keep moving Wheeling forward.”
Transportation and accessibility also plays a big role as they are among Wheeling’s strongest assets. Nearby Interstates 94, 90 and 294 enable the convenient delivery of products, goods and services from Wheeling to the rest of the country.
