Auto Industry Locations: Driving Success For Supply & Demand

In response to market forces, companies across the auto industry are seeking sites that support their production, supply chain, and other demands.

Camp Hall is powered by Santee Cooper, South Carolina’s largest power provider. Santee Cooper helped bring Volvo Car USA to its home state by purchasing a nearly 7,000-acre tract of land, helping facilitate a successful wetlands mitigation plan in collaboration with the state’s environmental groups, and offering a number of economic development incentives that helped solidify the deal.

Santee Cooper continues to offer low-cost, reliable, and environmentally responsible electricity that powers the plant daily, and helps deliver clean, safe water to the site from its Lake Moultrie water treatment plant.

With that experience, dedication and expertise, Santee Cooper and Camp Hall will continue to support Volvo’s expansion efforts in South Carolina for many years to come.

Texas: The Future Of Automotive

Texas is proud to be home to the automotive industry of the future. Already known for a well-established automotive manufacturing sector, the Lone Star State is also driving development of new advanced technologies in the field. The state’s highly skilled and diverse workforce, strategic and central geographic location, and best-in-class business climate offers the framework today’s automotive companies and suppliers need to thrive.

As the logistical heart of North America, Texas provides automotive companies easy access to domestic and international distribution hubs, suppliers, and markets across the globe with routes via land, sea, and air. These logistical advantages are supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure and transportation systems. In fact, automotive giant Volkswagen Group of America recently announced Port Freeport as the site of their new Gulf Coast logistics hub for future operations. It’s no surprise that Texas has been the No. 1 exporting state in the U.S. for the last 20 years, solidifying “Made in Texas” as one of the most powerful global brands.

Home to nearly 550 automotive firms, and long-standing operations for companies like General Motors, Peterbilt, and DeLorean Motor Company, the state’s auto sector continues to be a magnet for new investment. In fact, in 2020 and 2021 alone, Texas attracted a whopping $1.4 billion in investment and more than 6,700 new jobs from automotive companies expanding and relocating across the state.

Tesla, Toyota, Continental, Navistar, and many other global leaders have announced new investments or major expansions of their operations in Texas. Aisin AW recently opened a new $400 million production facility in Cibolo, TX, which will supply transmissions to the Toyota factory in nearby San Antonio. These operations will not only create up to 900 new jobs for Texans, but will also open the door for other automotive supply chain companies to locate in the state.

Tech is big in Texas, particularly in the automotive industry. Both private and public programs are driving research and development for electric vehicles and navigation and control for autonomous vehicles. Electric vehicle technology company REE selected Pflugerville, TX as the location for its first North American headquarters. Additionally, Toyota announced its first-ever Tundra hybrid will exclusively be produced at their San Antonio factory. Also, Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory outside of Austin, and the company’s headquarters relocation to the area, have helped solidify Texas as a key player in cutting-edge automotive technologies.

“Texas is leading the way in the development of new technologies in the automotive sector,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “The Lone Star State is a hub for innovation and R&D in electric vehicles and autonomous driving. Combined with our strong and growing supply chain for the parts that go into these vehicles, including valuable semiconductor chips, Texas continues to attract new and expanded automotive industry investment.”

Texas’ key business benefits, logistical advantages, specialized manufacturing expertise, and a focus on innovation, coupled with a growing market for auto parts suppliers, along with a trained, diverse and productive workforce will continue to drive high-speed growth in the state’s automotive sector.
