Aireon, LLC, an innovative provider of air traffic surveillance systems around the globe, will expand its presence in Fairfax County, VA. The company is moving its headquarters within the Tysons area of the county and will increase the square footage of its office space by nearly 150 percent, accommodating more than 50 new jobs over the next three years. Proximity to its customers and workforce were key to expanding the company’s headquarters in Fairfax County.
“Aireon chose to remain in Fairfax County and expand the headquarters due to its proximity to downtown Washington, DC, the Federal Aviation Administration and the area’s regional and international airports,” said Rich Nyren, chief financial officer of Aireon. “Additionally, Fairfax County has access to world-class public transportation, shops and restaurants and attracts some of the most educated workforce from the abundance of globally recognized local universities. We saw this as the perfect location to grow our company and enter the next stage of our operations.”
In collaboration with leading Air Navigation Service Providers around the world, Aireon is revolutionizing the global aviation industry. The company is providing the first-ever, global air traffic surveillance system using a space-based Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast network. Aireon’s technology significantly improves safety, efficiency, predictability, and capacity, all while reducing overall infrastructure costs.

Riley, interim president and CEO of the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA). “We are pleased to help Aireon expand as it finds new ways to improve the safety of air travel around the world.”
The FCEDA worked with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) to secure the project for Virginia and will support Aireon’s job creation through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program (VJIP). State-funded VJIP provides consultative services and funding to companies creating new jobs or experiencing technological change in order to support employee-training activities.

Aireon was founded in 2011 in partnership with NAV CANADA, ENAV, NATS, the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) and Naviair, as well as Iridium Communications and became an operational surveillance service in 2019.
