Kilgore Boasts “Location” At A Lower Cost

Orgill’s Vice President of Logistics has chosen locations for distribution centers in three states, and he ranks Kilgore, TX and its economic development team as key elements in the regional success of the nation’s largest independent distributor.

“Kilgore Economic Development Corporation put together the best package I’ve seen,” Vic Price said, “and I get support from staff I’ve not seen in other locations. I feel the staff truly listen and want to do what we need.”

Kilgore is primed for relocation and expansion with superior transportation options, essential proximity to key markets, and a robust workforce—‘location,’ without a markup.

A variety of key factors elevate the community in site selection—more than lower land prices and lower talent expense, more than Texas’ tax structure, and more than Kilgore’s geographic merits.

There’s less congestion to block product flow, with major highways and Interstate 20 at-hand. Major markets are in easy reach by road, air, or port—Dallas-Fort Worth, Shreveport-Bossier, and Houston are just a few hours away, and a day’s travel opens up much of the nation.

“Whether they’re going West Coast or East Coast, we’re going to be a central location to ship product,” says KEDC Executive Director Lisa Denton.

“Location” in Kilgore also means easier commutes for a competitive workforce. The Labor Draw area boasts close to 700,000 residents in 12 Northeast Texas counties connected by healthy routes. The portion of workers commuting more than 50 miles has grown steadily in the past decade, particularly in manufacturing.

Kilgore compared favorably in a case study pairing local profitability with the top 10 companies nationally in key industries. According to Texas A&M’s Global Supply Chain Laboratory, Kilgore employers noted local support was a boon, citing partnership with KEDC and the City of Kilgore. Other highlights included investment-ready property (like Class-A Synergy Industrial Park) as well as local direct incentives, ease of doing business, and agreeable utility requirements.

The survey underscored Kilgore’s geographically advantageous location, transport merits, and its stable, robust labor pool as essential aspects of its favorable comparison.

Kilgore is part of two MSAs (Tyler and Longview) with more than 350,000 in the workforce currently.

“There is a healthy contingent for research and development,” Denton noted, plus aerospace and skilled labor for advanced manufacturing. “We have companies that are heavy in the engineering field that the quality of life lends to.”

Cost of Living is 81.8% of the national average for an area blessed with essential ingredients for exceptional quality of life. The Gregg County job base puts healthcare at the top, followed by the goods producing sector at 23%.

Orgill selected Kilgore in 2007, expanding in recent years to just less than one million square feet under-roof a stone’s throw from KEDC’s headquarters in Synergy Park alongside others in Kilgore like Martin Resource Management, SCP Distributors, Evolution Outdoor and German based Wagner Tuning USA, Kilgore.
