Egg-Laying Business’ Expansion to be Served by North Western Electric

Defiance County commissioners recently approved a tax abatement related to the construction of an egg-production facility near Hicksville. The producer, Hillandale Farms Ohio, plans to build the facility on Rosedale Road at a cost of $41 million.

The project includes eight production barns, water wells, manure-waste handling and storage facilities, and a waste lagoon. Hillandale plans to begin with two million hens and production of 125,000 dozen eggs before expanding to four million hens and 250,000 dozen eggs. The planned facility will be served by North Western Electric Cooperative.

Hillandale agreed to create 65 full-time jobs. In return, the county has granted the company a 60 percent tax exemption over 10 years for real property improvements. Commissioners also approved a development agreement with Hillandale Farms.

Defiance County will complete improvements on Rosedale Road, and provide $50,000 in community development block grant (CDBG) funds, plus $214,000 in Ohio Department of Transportation jobs and commerce funds. Hillandale, in turn, will contribute $166,000 toward the financing of the road improvements.

Previously, the county commissioners authorized application for a $500,000 CDBG grant through Ohio Development Services Agency to fund improvements.
