Atlanta Lands $400M UPS Distribution Hub, 1,250 Jobs

More than $400 million in investment and 1,250 jobs will result from the new UPS regional sorting and distribution hub in Atlanta, GA.

More than $400 million in investment and 1,250 jobs will be the result of United Parcel Service Inc.’s (UPS) new regional sorting and distribution hub in Atlanta, GA.

The 1.2 million-square-foot facility, which will feature sorting, processing and data capture technology, is being built in an economically depressed part of Fulton County on a 341-acre industrial site. It is scheduled to be up and running by the end of 2018, and the hub will also include a delivery vehicle center and retail customer center.

UPS delivers packages in more than 220 countries and territories and employs 266,000 associates worldwide. The company is headquartered in Atlanta and has an annual payroll of more than $1 billion in Georgia.

“UPS has proudly made its global headquarters in Atlanta for more than two decades,” said David Abney, UPS chairman and CEO. “This strategic capital investment will feature state-of-the-art technology. When combined with the strong transportation connections and talented labor pool that Atlanta provides, UPS is building flexibility to meet the growing needs of our customers and our business in Georgia, and around the world.”

UPS currently employs more than 14,000 Georgia citizens in package delivery operations, ground freight, aircraft operations, data center management and contract logistics. Product and technology development, global transportation network planning and other corporate staffs are based in metro Atlanta.

“It’s an exciting day when UPS, a company with such deep roots in our state, announces they are creating an even bigger footprint in Georgia,” said Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) Commissioner Pat Wilson. “This announcement is a testament to our world-class logistics infrastructure and reliable workforce – both which are critically important to meeting the needs of UPS’ customers. We look forward to working with UPS as they establish a regional hub in Fulton County.”

In addition to the GCEcD, UPS worked with Invest Atlanta and Fulton County to select a site for this project.

“We are excited that UPS has decided to expand its operations in the city of Atlanta with this major distribution center,” said Invest Atlanta President and CEO Dr. Eloisa Klementich. “This new facility represents a significant economic investment in the southside of Atlanta that will provide residents access to new jobs across a spectrum of skill levels. Invest Atlanta looks forward to working with the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency and UPS to build a pipeline of qualified professionals for these positions.”

“I am pleased that our county leaders had the foresight to realize the value of this land and work closely with UPS to make this exciting project happen,” said John Eaves, chairman of the Fulton County Commission. “The benefits it will bring in terms of jobs and investment are immeasurable. This is a huge shot in the arm and yet another example of the economic engine that Fulton County has become.”
